About
I am an American artist known for creating large, figurative, abstracted paintings & multi-media pieces. My work consists of a dialogue between figure, fantasy & abstraction. I strive for a tension between abstraction & recognizable subject matter, creating forms that are suggestive & yet not too literal. I am an Expressionist & am most influenced, art historically, by Cubism & Surrealism. I enjoy experimenting with Space, either exaggerating implied 3-D space on a 2-D picture plane, or creating ambiguous space, where the viewer's eye travels back in space before returning to the surface of the 2-D picture plane.
From painting around the canvas on the floor, I became obsessed with creating "4-Way Works". The narrative quality of early work evolved into a narrative/conceptual dialogue as I became more & more involved in seeing the works any of four ways, each view lending its own visual associative suggestions for personal interpretation by each spectator. We all see things from different perspectives, and these "4-Way-Works" encourage each viewer to find personal and universal connections. In the "4-Way-Works", the forms & compositions needed to be transformable, with positive & negative space sometimes changing from viewpoint to viewpoint.
This problem, & the criteria that grew out of it, demanded that the images become more abstract, & also affected the compositions & presentations /installations of these 4-Way-Works. I have presented them on the floor, the ceiling, & with knobs that the spectator is encouraged to turn. Recently, I have just put hardware on the back that enables each piece to be hung from any direction. I am currently collaborating with an engineer for an exhibit later in 2025 to create "4-Way Works" that will turn 90 degrees automatically every 30 seconds at different intervals.
Although my Expressionistic style & process are somewhat auto-biographical, my 4-Way-Works are really Art about Art & are really a very formal extension of Cubistic ideas. They are an inventive blending of "isms" that have come before into a new profound cocktail that excites me to produce new, fresh, relevant works. They also challenge the traditional function of subject matter, content & form as each spectator creates the subject matter, & the form of the "4-Way-Works" creates the content of transformation & simultaneity. Whereas the figure brings me back to reality & our human psychology, the "4-Way works" approach Metaphysical content of Transformation, Simultaneity & Reconciliation of Opposites.
Things are not always as they appear to be. What is reality? What is abstraction? Everything is actually dependent on our perception & our interpretation of the world around us. My goals are to stimulate the viewers imagination & help the viewer find personal meaning & have fun with the art. I wish for my kinetic, interactive "4-Way-Works" to visually attract interest & be a source of inspiration & an uplifting experience for many people in many fields of knowledge & experience.
